This meets the requirements of Section 10 (2) of the Sustainable Energy Act, 2002, which states that ‘The Board shall direct the functions of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland in accordance with this Act and shall satisfy itself as to the adequacy of the systems in place for that purpose and shall keep under review the performance of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland.’

Brendan Halligan, Chair (appointed 1st October 2007) is managing partner of CIPA, a public affairs consultancy, chairman of the Institute of International and European Affairs, and a board member of Mainstream Renewable Power. He chaired Bord na Móna for ten years and worked in a consultant capacity with Airtricity.
Joe Harford (19th September 2006–30 April 2009; reappointed 25th August 2009) served as president and CEO of Astellas Ireland and is a past chairman and president of the ESRI. He is a non-executive director of Tara Winthrop Ltd, a healthcare facility; managing director of Joe Harford and Associates Ltd, a management consultancy company; chair of the National Institute of Bioprocessing, Research and Training; and chair of the Fingal County Enterprise Board. He currently chairs the High-Level Action Group on Green Enterprise and is a member of the Green IFSC Steering Group.
Grattan Healy (appointed 11th May 2009) worked as the Energy Policy Adviser to the Green Group in the European Parliament/EFA from 1995 to 2001, after which he returned to Ireland to develop renewable energy projects. He is a Council Member of the Irish Wind Energy Association and full member of Meithealna Gaoithe as well as being a partner in Fuinneamh Sceirde Teorantawhich is developing an offshore wind project off the Galway coast, and FST is a founder member of the National Offshore Wind Association of Ireland (NOW Ireland). He holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from UCD and an MBA from Trinity.
John Buckley (served 1st May 2002 – 30 April 2005 and 8th September 2005 - 30 April 2009 reappointed 15th January 2010) is a property developer, auctioneer and surveyor, with 25 years business experience. John is a Board member of John Buckley Auctioneers, chairman of Killarney Race Company and a member of the Advisory Committee of the Environmental Protection Agency.
Brian Carroll (appointed 1st August 2010) is Finance Officer in the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources since January 2008. Prior to that he worked in the Central Expenditure Evaluation Unit of the Department of Finance. In total he has spend 18 years in the Civil Service, having also worked in the Departments of Justice and Foreign Affairs. He holds a first class Masters in Economic Science from the National University of Ireland.
Sean Wyse (appointed from 1st August 2010) worked for over 35 years in ESB, where he was one of the Executive Directors from 1997 - 2007. He is currently a member of the Board of the Irish Blood Transfusion Service. He has a degree in Electrical Engineering from UCD and an MBA from UL.
Michael Conlon (appointed 15th September 2011) is an experienced freelance organisation and corporate (NGO, SME and Micro) management advisor with particular interests in governance; human resources; strategic planning and sustainability. He completed a successful career in various roles in multi national industry and has since served in the areas of social investment; micro finance; community development and social enterprise in Ireland and internationally. He has been Visiting Practitioner in Social Finance at the University of Dublin, Trinity College, School of Business (Centre for Non Profit Management) and a Management Adviser and Social Finance Executive at Clann Credo - the Social Investment Fund. He has also served as Process Manager and Secretary to the National Steering Committee on Social Finance which presented sector changing recommendations to Government. He is a graduate of the National University of Ireland and holds qualifications from other institutions including the Irish Management Institute. Michael is experienced in governance having served numerous organisations and companies at director level in Ireland and elsewhere. He is a Member of the Institute of Directors and the Institute of Management Consultants and Advisers.
Julie O'Neill (appointed 15th September 2011) is proprietor of Join the Dots, an independent strategic management consultancy. She served as Secretary General at the Department of Transport from 2002 to 2009 and, in the course of her public service career, worked in 8 government Departments. She is a board member at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA). She holds an MSc in Policy Analysis from Trinity College Dublin and a B. Comm from UCD.
Chief Executive (ex officio) J Owen Lewis (appointed January 2009) is an architect and engineer who practised in Ireland and Zambia and taught in Ireland, Jordan, and the USA. He co-ordinated many European Commission energy research and dissemination activities and has lectured in most EU member states. Formerly responsible for Building Technology in the UCD School of Architecture and director of the UCD Energy Research Group, he was elected Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture UCD in 2001, and subsequently became Principal of the UCD College of Engineering, Mathematical and Physical Sciences. He was Bord na Mona Director for Innovation and R&D between 2006 and 2008. He is Professor Emeritus of Architectural Science.
