What are the changes to the Better Energy Homes Scheme?
The Better Energy Homes scheme re-opened on 8th of December. There are two key changes:
- Revised grant amounts for wall insulation and BER
- Internal and external wall insulation grants will no longer be one single amount but rather different grant levels will apply depending on the applicant’s house type.
Grants for attic insulation and all heating system upgrades including solar remain unchanged.

All other terms and conditions remain the same and the application process is the same.
I sent in my application form yesterday / a couple of days ago – what does this mean for my grant?
All grant applications which have been either post marked or received on or before the scheme closed on the 5th of December 2011 and which comply with the terms and conditions of the grant programme will be offered the grant amounts applicable on the 5th of December 2011.
I cancelled my grant to re-apply and now the grant amounts are lower – Why was I not informed of this prior to cancelling?
It is not possible to inform the market in advance of such scheme changes as previous experience has proven that this information, if provided in advance of a change, has distorted the market considerably and is not in line with government procedure for these types of programmes.
Why did SEAI not provide notice to homeowners or installers of the planned change?

I have received my application form back in the post as something is wrong – what does this mean for me?
You should read and complete the instructions contained within the cover letter which accompanied your returned application form. We would encourage you to complete these instructions as soon as possible.
I have completed application forms in my office for a number of homeowners. What am I going to tell them?
Unfortunately only fully completed application forms post marked or received on or before Monday 5th December will be eligible for the grant funding levels available before the 5th December under the Better Energy Homes scheme.
Does this mean the homeowner I am due to do work for will get less money?
Applicants, who have already been approved under either scheme, can continue with planned works in accordance with their existing grant offer and terms and conditions. Requests for payment can be submitted as normal.
I am a Better Energy Homes registered Contractor, how will these changes affect me?
There are no changes to your current registration or to the Contractors Terms and Conditions. As a contractor please make yourself aware of the new grant levels and ensure that you are informing prospective customers of the correct grant amounts.
