Grant Support

The Miscanthus Pilot Demonstration Programme provides capital investment grants for the installation of automatic boilers fuelled by miscanthus in commercial, industrial, public and community premises in Ireland. Support is up to 50% of the eligible costs, up to maximum qualifying cost profiles as listed below, with a project or site grant cap of €75,000.

Eligible costs

The eligible costs for support under this programme include:– boiler, feed mechanism, storage, pipework, instrumentation and control, and installation.  Heat delivery piping / equipment from the boiler is not included in eligible costs.

Maximum Qualifying Cost Profiles

The range of investment costs for qualifying boilers is limited by maximum qualifying cost profiles outlined in tables A and B below, the cost profiles are inclusive of eligible boiler costs, installation and fuel storage.

Table A: Boiler with chipped or pelleted miscanthus feeding mechanism

Maximum Capacity Costs for Biomass Boilers
Plant scale ranges
kW

Maximum Capacity Cost

€/kW

≤20 kW€1,500 / kW
>20 kW and ≤ 50 kW€650 / kW
>50 kW and ≤ 250 kW€500 / kW
>250 kW and ≤ 500 kW€350 / kW
>500 kW and ≤ 1000 kW€250 / kW
>1000 kWSee Below (€150 / kW)

Table B: Boiler with baled miscanthus feeding mechanism

Maximum Capacity Costs for Biomass Boilers
Plant scale ranges
kW

Maximum Capacity Cost

€/kW

 >50 kW and ≤ 250 kW€750 / kW
 >250 kW and ≤ 500 kW€525 / kW
 >500 kW and ≤ 1000 kW€375 / kW
 >1000 kWSee Below (€225 / kW)

It is envisaged that over the life of the programme the cost profile may require alteration to reflect up to date market developments. SEAI funding will be determined based on the lesser of 50% of the submitted costs and 50% of the maximum capacity cost range given above, up to a maximum grant of €75,000 for any one project or site.

Worked examples

Example A:  Proposal for a 100 kW boiler to be fed with chipped miscanthus.

  • For this the maximum capacity cost (Table A) is €500 / kW.  Therefore the maximum eligible cost is
    • 100 kW x €500 / kW = €50,000.
    • The maximum grant, at 50%, is €50,000 x 50% = €25,000.

Example B:  Proposal for a 700 kW boiler to be fed with baled miscanthus

  • For this the maximum capacity cost (Table B) is €375 / kW.  Therefore the maximum eligible cost is
    • 700 kW x €375 / kW = €262,500.
    • At 50%, the estimated grant is €262,500 x 50% = €131,250.  However this is greater than €75,000, therefore the maximum grant in this case is €75,000.
